Starting with a few instances of mobile devices last year, USB Type C is becoming a go-to for a superior connector option.
The 3.5mm stereo connector being dropped is not a recent issue, this is already being implemented from years ago for example the Oppo R5. It was so thin specially when the stereo connector was not implemented, which also paved the way to lesser circuit bulk.
USB Type C might now be a great contender for the new market and we might not want another set of incompatible connector types to add to our list of confusing connectors to remember when travelling. But, with this new innovative technology, we might be able to go further than being stuck on a analog connector (yes, the 3.5mm jack is analog).
Let's hope that the speculation about devices with USB Type C wont burn our hands or faces off, if there is faulty wiring - considering that more power flows to it than a regular USB cable.
